Star Wars: The Old Republic is a MMORPG based on the Star Wars franchise. The game was initially revealed on October 21, 2008 and was developed by BioWare Austin along with a supplemental team from BioWare Edmonton. Within 3 days after it launched, subscriber base was said to have reached over one million.

It is widely considered as the spiritual successor to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR). The game scope has been described as "essentially building KOTOR 3 through KOTOR 10, and then shipping them all at once."[1]

During its presentation at E3 BioWare announced the game would be the first MMORPG to feature large-scale voice acting. It was and continues to build on that premise even with current expansions. The game features Companions that the player's character interacts with during gameplay, also fully voiced. Each class also has a starship which acts as that players primary base of operation. In 2015, player housing was also added (known as Strongholds).

The game was originally subscription based only but has since adopted a free-to-play model with a subscription option. The choice of subscription provides 'premium' items and services.

The game has had several expansions added over the years since launch with more coming later in 2016.

  • Rise of the Hutt Cartel - April 14, 2013
  • Galactic Starfighter - February 4, 2014
  • Galactic Strongholds - October 14, 2014
  • Shadow of Revan - December 9, 2014
  • Knights of the Fallen Empire - October 27, 2015 (new chapters still planned for release in 2016)

Background[]

The original story occurs in a shaky era of the Star Wars universe, among a delicate ceasefire between the Galactic Republic, factioned by the Jedi, and the recently resurfaced Sith. The plot revolves around the conflicts that arise as a result of the reshuffling of power after the Great Galactic War. The story also concludes the story of Revan from the original Knights of the Old Republic through the original game as well as expansions.

Media[]

An internet comic produced by Dark Horse and written by The Old Republic developer Rob Chestney offers backstory to the game."[2] The story spans ten years from the signing of the Treaty of Coruscant to the events leading into the game. There were six comics in all.
