Tomb Raider was originally released in 1996 for MS-DOS, PlayStation, and Sega Saturn. The game follows the exploits of Lara Croft, a British female archaeologist in search of ancient treasures à la Indiana Jones. The game was critically acclaimed and widely influential. The concept for Tomb Raider began in 1993 and the person most involved in that creation was Toby Gard who worked for Core Design. The original concept included the main character originally envisioned as a man, but the company co-founder was concerned that the character would be too closely compared to Indiana Jones, so the gender was changed.

Main franchise

  • Tomb Raider - 1996
  • Tomb Raider 2 - 1997
  • Tomb Raider 3 - 1998
  • Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation - 1999
  • Tomb Raider: Chronicles - 2000
  • Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness - 2003
  • Tomb Raider: Legend - 2006
  • Tomb Raider: Anniversary - 2007
  • Tomb Raider: Underworld - 2008
  • Tomb Raider - 2013
  • Rise of the Tomb Raider - 2015

The first spin-off for the title Tomb Raider was released on the Game Boy Color (GBC) in 2000. It was developed by Core Design and the sequel Tomb Raider: Curse of the Sword released in 2001. The next spin-off, Tomb Raider: The Prophecy, was developed by Ubisoft Milan and released for the GBA in 2002. Four new titles came in 2003 for mobile and a platform puzzle version (Lara Croft: Relic Run) released in 2015, also for mobile.

A separate sub-series was also published beginning in 2010 and included titles Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light and Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris. The game has also resulted in the creation of films, an animated series and four official novels based on the character Lara Croft.
